Seasonal Care
Environmental conditions can affect the performance, safety, and longevity of your ORCA Cold Plunge system.
Making simple adjustments throughout the year will help protect system components and maintain a consistent cold plunge experience.
Cold Weather Shutdown
If outdoor temperatures are expected to reach or remain at freezing, the system must be shut down to prevent damage.
Turn off and unplug the chiller, disconnect hoses, and move the chiller to a protected indoor location.
Freezing water inside the cooling system, pump, or plumbing can expand and cause internal component failure.
During freezing conditions, you can continue using your plunge by installing the included tub plugs (stored inside the orange canister that came with your system).
Fill the tub with clean water and allow natural outdoor temperatures to cool the water.
Preparing for Freezing Temperatures
When sustained freezing weather is expected, fully drain water from the tub, hoses, filter housing, and plumbing connections.
Allow remaining moisture to dry as much as possible before storing the system.
Proper draining helps reduce the risk of cracked fittings, pump damage, and heat exchange issues caused by ice formation.
Winter Storage Guidance
For extended periods without use, store the chiller in a dry, protected location away from freezing temperatures.
Cover or store the plunge tub to minimize debris accumulation and weather exposure.
Before returning the system to operation, inspect hoses, connections, and filters to ensure everything is clean and properly secured.
Warm Climate Protection
In hot environments or areas with prolonged sun exposure, water temperatures may rise more quickly and increase system workload.
Using an insulated cover can help maintain colder water temperatures and improve cooling efficiency.
If you own a Migaloo or Barrel, consider using an ORCA Insulated Cover to help stabilize water temperature and reduce heat gain.
Keeping the plunge covered when not in use also helps limit debris entry and evaporation.
Seasonal Routine Adjustments
Cold exposure duration and temperature settings may need to be adjusted as environmental conditions change.
Shorter sessions may feel more appropriate during colder seasons, while warmer conditions may allow longer exposure at similar temperatures.
Pay attention to comfort, recovery, and overall system performance when adapting your routine.
Restarting After Storage
When bringing your plunge system back into use:
-
Reconnect hoses and fittings securely
-
Install a fresh filter
-
Refill the tub with clean water
After refilling, prime the system using the included priming pump to ensure proper water circulation before turning on the chiller.
Allow the system to circulate for several minutes and confirm strong return flow before setting your desired temperature.
Following proper restart procedures helps protect internal components and supports reliable long-term performance.
